Is Professional Credit Repair Right For You?
Everyone has had to deal with debt at some point in his or her life. If you've gone to college, bought a car, signed up for a credit card, bought a home, or visited a hospital you will have (or have had) bills to deal with. If you are in debt right now, there is no reason to be embarrassed. Believe it or not, it is less common to be debt free!
Unfortunately, because the price of most things (housing, food, gas) has gone up exponentially faster than the average household income, debt has become more of a problem in recent years. Debt has quickly spiraled out of most peoples' control. Being deeply in debt will lower your credit rating and, depending on how out of control your debt has become, you might be tempted to consider professional credit repair services as an "easy" way out of debt.
Professional credit repair is a growing industry that feeds on your insecurity and fear of your debt and you should make sure to research it thoroughly before signing up with any particular professional credit repair service.
5 Reasons NOT to Employ a Professional Credit Repair Service
1. There are just as many (if not more) scam artists masquerading as professional credit repair services as there are legitimate professional credit repair services and it is often too hard to tell the difference until you've invested a great deal of money in the service, at which point it is often too late to get your money back.
2. Professional credit repair services are not actually in business to make you money, but are in business to increase their own profit margins. Not only will you be repaying your own debt "with their assistance" but you will probably have to pay quite a few additional fees (commissions, "administrative costs" etc) to the company itself.
3. Check your state laws regarding professional credit repair services. In some states, employing a professional credit repair service is considered the same thing as declaring Chapter Seven bankruptcy—something you want to keep off your credit report at all costs and is almost impossible to recover from!
4. Future lenders often look at people who used professional credit repair services as lending risks. This is because they often see the use of professional credit repair services as a sign that you were unable to handle your debt yourself. While it might be true that your debt had become too overwhelming for you to handle on your own, future lenders will not care about the back story.
5. It is always better to do your best to pay down your debt on your own. It might feel easier to use a "middle man" but there is no way for you to ensure that your professional credit repair service is representing your best interests. What's more, if you pay down your debt on your own, you will build a better credit history, increase your credit score and prove to future lenders that you pay down your own debt, making you look financially responsible.
