I saw the post labelled "Increase internet download speed", but this one is generally for the browser species (plus this might help on capped broadband connections.) - Turn off images, most times images turn out as big or far bigger than the page bandwidth itself(many of these images were usually adverts before flash came along), turning this off will in most cases increase browsing speed considerably.
How to disable this?
In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > Multimedia section > Untick "Show pictures".
In Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Content tab > Untick "Load Images automatically", the "Exceptions" button(in FF3, allows you to block images on specific servers).
In Opera(default install), there will be a button(looks like a camera) on the status bar next to the zoom dropdown, this will switch from "show images" to "cached images"(a way to view images already downloaded without downloading more.), to add one with "No images" option too, right click the toolbar > customize.. > buttons tab > browser view subsection > drag the "show images" button(doesn't matter which, the one with the triangle has a popup menu allowing a choice between the three.) from there onto the toolbar and remove the old one. If you want to block specific images, right click in the page > block content > and click the images you want removed > then click done. - Turn off plugins, now in the new days of the internet flash has invaded the scenes of advertising, therefore much more internet bandwidth is allocated to this new breed of annoying ads. These usually take more memory than images too as the browser has to render the plugin.
How to disable this?
Difficult this, both of the top two browsers don't offer easy access to this sort of option, internet explorer on one hand has options scattered over in Internet options > Advanced > Multimedia subsection as "play video"/"play music"/"play animations" in web pages, also it has options scattered in the security tab > custom level section > "ActiveX and plugins" subsection > "Run activeX controls and plugins" section. And of course so clunky to turn back on too.
Firefox although doesn't seem to have a way to turn off plugins, it does allow specific controls to different plugins on the page, in Tools > Options > Applications > search for "shockwave flash" and it should allow you to control it another way.
Opera on the other hand, does have a way to block all plugins in one full swoop, in more ways than one, the most tedious way is going into Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Content subsection > untick "enable plugins".
A quicker way is to hit the F12 key and untick "enable plugins" there.
Another less tedious way is to get a button onto a toolbar to enable/disable plugins instantly, right click a toolbar (such as the status bar) > customize > buttons tab > Preferences subsection > Drag "Enable plugins" to a toolbar.
The final way is to enable/disable plugins per site, right click on the site you don't want plugins to work on > Edit Site Preferences... > Content tab > untick "Enable plugins". Thats it.
- Javascript is both the rise and the downfall of the internet, it makes websites look fancy and fresh with the "Web 2.0" era or "AJAX" era. But also the downfall is the way how websites can be exploited because of it, not to mention that in many cases, adverts including flash can be javascript generated.
How to disable this?
Internet Explorer has this option in "Security settings" > Scripting subsection called "Active Scripting" , clicking Disable should disable Javascript.
Firefox has this in Tools > Options > Content tab > untick "Enable Javascript"
Opera can do the same way as before with plugins, either by hitting F12, grabbing and putting a button on the toolbar, or going through the prefs dialog to disable javascript, as well as turning it off via editing site preferences.
