Thats true and happens way to often. But if you make $1 every 5 rounds, and you play 500 rounds a day, you cashed $100.
There are ways to make roulette less dangerous for you, but you have to be prepared to take some losses and not get greedy.
I've seen people bet hundreds of dollars on black because 11 or 12 reds have come out... And then another red comes out... Now they are out all their money...
The trick is to get at the no limit (and if at all possible, no minimum) tables, and capitalize yourself fairly well.
