one of the replies says you have to cut your finger and drop the blood in the flame so it will reflect the infared light...  | |

I have no idea why it didn't work for you.
Someone (I'm not saying who) vacuumed over the cord on the sensor bar, and it broke. Having seen that clip (or something like it) the night before, I decided to give it a try.
It worked just as well as the original sensor bar did!
Go me.
(Edit: If you look at the sensor bar, look at the ends. Behind the semitransparent black plastic, you can see three LEDs on each end...)
