Someone (I'm not saying who) vacuumed over the cord on the sensor bar, and it broke. Having seen that clip (or something like it) the night before, I decided to give it a try.
It worked just as well as the original sensor bar did!
Go me. 
(Edit: If you look at the sensor bar, look at the ends. Behind the semitransparent black plastic, you can see three LEDs on each end...)
