Questions About Wii Modding and Backups. I am very skeptical about Wii Hard Mods since a total stranger would be messing with my console. I have someone who is trying to charge me $120 for a D2pro9 Mod Chip (including labor for him to install)? Apparenty it clips on and no soldering is needed. He told me this does not void the warrenty (mine is good util Nov. 2009) Please correct this if it's wrong. Is he charging too much?
He also told me that Soft Mods will not allow you to play backups or burnt dvd's in your Wii. Also, he said that if I do not burn my own DVD's correctly, it will perminantly ruin my Wii if I were to slip a curropted disk in it (or a disk that wasn't burnt right). Is this true? I am not sure if it is or if he is just trying to scare me into buying his own burnt games.
Please let me know what is right and wrong and if you have any advice for me.

Re: Questions About Wii Modding and Backups. I have a chipped US Wii. So long as the chipped games you put in your Wii are of the same region you'll be fine. You can mess up your Wii if you put in the ones of the wrong region.
However, you can change the region for the games that you download. The tools you need are:
Region Frii
Wii Brick Blocker
WUM
Look for these on the Internet. With these 3 tools, you shouldn't have any problems again!!

Re: Questions About Wii Modding and Backups. Thanks for your reply but I'll need a bit more guidance and explanation for me to fully understand what you are trying to say. Also if you could answer the other questions I have that would be great.
I am new at this and don't know much.

Re: Questions About Wii Modding and Backups. A chip that doesn't need any soldering at all DOES void the warranty (It voids the moment you open up your Wii). Plus, they ALL need soldering but not on the wii, they don't explain that so that people like you buy them thinking they won't need to hire someone to solder it.
I think the guy is trying to scare you into buying his games indeed as it's almost impossible to burn incorrectly a game. But MoneyMan is right. You must only play games of your region (PAL for Europe, NTSC-U for US and NTSC-J for Japan), but it's possible now thanks to WiiBrickBlocker to just patch the ISO before it is burnt and voila.

Re: Questions About Wii Modding and Backups. What Gasly says about the Warranty is true and if I remember rightly there is 1 wire to solder on the DVD drive from the chip but otherwise it's a clip on and as long as it's done correctly and you look after your machine you'll be fine and your Wii will live well past it's warranty! As for copied games, I have a little experience in it, you will have to get games from your own region but if you have the iso on your desktop ready to be burnt you'll need 2 programs, Wii brickblocker and regrion Frii I think theyre called although I think there's an all in one out there with both programs on! All you do is open region frii and then find your Wii iso and load it in, it should tell you what region it is at the moment and there'll be an area where you can choose which area you want it to change to, choose the right one for your area and click on go and it'll change it! Do pretty much the same thing with the Wii brick blocker by loading the iso in and pressing go, it just stops the updates from the disk as it's from a different area and if you were to run the update it may brick your Wii but this is supposed to stop any updates. But if it does ask to update when you play it then just select no! unless of course it's an original or 1 that's definatly from your area!
If you put in a wrongly burnt disk it'll just show up as currupted orunable to read so what the bloke says about the corrupted disks is bull!
My advice mate is if you want it that badly then just do it! if it's done correctly then he should know how to open the seals etc to try and keep them intact IF you had to return it under warranty but obviously you'd still have to remove the chip 1st! Other than that i'd go for it as i've only heard good reports about the chip and most consoles nowadays live beyond their warranty so there should be no worries there!
I'll try and find the tools you'll need if you decide to burn your own disks and the only place i'll suggest for games is to go look on the torrent boards for what games you want and read the comments from people that have downloaded it 1st and see what they say about it!
Also regarding the soft mods, they can be done quite easily but you'll need a copy of Zelda the twighlight princess and then some free software, save ghames from the net, it's a bit like xbox1 hacking! the only thing with running the backup games is that the games cinematics run at 3X as oposed to the proper disk being 6X but if you can live with that then go here Wii Softmodding for Dummies - Powered by CO.CC and take a look! it's all done through SD card and a few other things but it may be a way to go if you don't fancy losing $120 but it may still void the warranty the site says unless you can revert it all back to normal if it needs to go back for some reason!
hope this cleared your answers up.i'l edit later if I find that all in one, good luck
EDIT:- It looks as though the clip doesn't need soldering after all unless you want to play games from other regions but with the Wii brick blocker and region Frii you won't need that so the mod is a completely solderless 1 unless you want to play backups without using the 2 previous programs when you copy backups to play! As I said though, you might be better off/ ok to use the softmod as there's feature in it that alows you to play games from other regions by going into a menu and choosing and setting a different region to play whatever game you put in!Last edited by mikeydavies; 01-05-2009 at 01:42 AM.

Re: Questions About Wii Modding and Backups. Hi,
Yes the myth of not being able to play backups etc with a softmodded wii is completely false as is damaging the wii itself. don`t believe the scaremongers who want to get business from you by installing a chip and i`m sure if they break your wii they won`t cover it either. Chips are less hassle initially but a softmod is as good these days. With a softmodded wii you can do the following 100% fine:
Play backups from DVD-r`s from all regions
Play backups from USB Hard disks from all regions
Play backups from SD Memory and USB memory cards
Install and play wii-ware and Virtual consoles games from all regions
I have a wii here with a pair of 1TB external USB hard disks packed with games and as yet not had one game fail to load. The procedure to softmod the wii, install the relevant updates and applications is quite simple you just need to make sure that the files you have are not fake and that you do this in the right order.
I can if required give you some tips on the process if you need it and so far i have done around 70 consoles with 0 issues or errors.
So bottom line is that this can all be done quite simply without risk but make sure you either read up first or speak to someone like myself who has experience and can give you genuine advice
cheers,
